This is the website of Neil McDougall, a musician/blogger/podcaster/bookie from Ayrshire.

My first Album of The Year 2004 candidate has just arrived…

…And it’s The Human Equation by Ayreon, a.k.a Arjen Lucassen and a bunch of guest singers, keyboardists, and a guy called Ed Warby on drums.

For me, the real draw is the idea of having three of my favourite vocalists on one CD (sometimes even in the same song); James LaBrie (Dream Theater) Devin Townsend (Steve Vai, Strapping Young Lad, solo) and Mikael Akerfeldt (Opeth, Bloodbath). The music is varied and dynamic, but never straying too far from classic prog, with some very Pink Floyd-esque sections. But sometimes the guitars get cranked to 11 and everything goes all \m/METAL\m/ with Devy and Mikael growling/screaming away, double bass drums pounding etc.

The album isn’t out until May 24th, but I *cough* acquired a promo copy of it. I’m going to buy the limited edition though, as it’s an Inside Out limited edition, and Inside Out’s LE’s have killer packaging, and this one also comes with a bonus DVD. Kick ass.

So, yeah. May 24. Ayreon. The Human Equation. Buy it, or I’ll digitally imprint the badger dance animation into the inside of your eyelids until you’re locked ina rubber room yelling ‘SNAAAAKKKEE!! AAHHOOOHHH IT’S A SNNAAAAAKKKEE!’
