Using the Producer Edition disc with the limited edition boxed-set version of Dream Theater’s new album, I’ve created a mashup mix of Dream Theater’s ‘Wither and Rick Astley’s ‘Never Gonna Give You Up’. It had to happen eventually. Have a listen with the Flash player below.
Update: How about it going the other way? Wither’s vocals over Never Gonna Give You Up’s music? Here it is!
Update #2: MP3 links on the My Music page.

That’s brilliant man! Really good work – love the duet part!
MP3?
This is AMAZING! I’m not a fan of DT or Rick Astley, but this got stuck in my head on the first listen! Great work man
I always knew it: LaBrie should’ve been a pop singer.
Astley on ‘Wither’ is very awesome – great job!

Pure genius
Well done

[…] Dream Theater gets Rick Rolled This was posted on the Voices UK and i thought i’d share it here as its, in my opinion a Piece of outstanding work, http://www.neilmcdougall.com/?p=30 […]
Pure pan-fried delight napped with a deeply rich awesumsauce. You rock my world. I suspect once the DT boys get to here this you’ll be captain famous!
awesome, they are actually very entertaining!! how do I get to copy this and put them in my IPOD?
Very awesome, sir. Excellent mashup. I bow to your skills.
[…] This is in EVERY WAY superior to the Nirvana one. http://www.neilmcdougall.com/?p=30 […]
Fantastic work, Neil! Any chance of mp3s…?
[…] musician/blogger Neil McDougall got his hands on the limited edition box set version of DT’s latest, Black Clouds and Silver […]
I don’t really like DT, and I don’t really like Rick Astley, but I DO like this.
This is absolutely brilliant. Great work.
This is just awesome! This is kinda masterpiece, very very funny! 🙂
WOW–BRILLIANT!! HAHAHHAHAHA
Hilarious–and even more so that I actually like BOTH versions more than either originals!!!
all i want now is a way to play both your creations at exactly the same time. Might be interesting…
How did you come up with that combo?
Gotta hand it to you that’s pretty good.
Pretty, pretty, good.
man, your dream theater/astley mashups are ace!! any chance of sending me the tracks in higher bitrate?
cheers from austria,
schmolli
oh…..my…..god! this is halarious! i thank you for the laugh. personally, the instrumental part of Withered is awesome, but the lyrics are a joke. love th song sans the voice.
thanks again for the chuckle
As a DT fan, I was killing myself laughing!! Quite possibly the best male rock duet since Bowie and Queen doing “Under Pressure”!! Glad to see Astley getting some work once again!!
You took 2 crappy songs and made 1 brilliant one! (the one with Rick Astley’s vox). I wish you took a little more care of the mix, I’m sure you could have made things sound a bit better. I can’t stop listening to nevergonnawither! Please re-remix with better sound!
These are both totally awesome, man. I don’t know which one I like more, but I’m going to keep listening to them over and over until I decide.
AMAZING. This is wonderful. I hope you become famous.
rarely is music beautiful enough to seriously drop my jaw. this did it. not a dream theater fan, and not a rick astley fan, but WOW!
been rockin this song for about a half hour now back to back.
listening to it while thinking of my cat… brings a warmness..
Labrie’s vocals on Never Gonna Give You Up music reminds me somehow of U2 😀 Excellent job on both 😀
[…] song here, it retains a hue of funny-ness on its emotional margins – especially after the rickrolling of “Wither” by a guy named Neil McDougall earlier this year. But go and see for yourselves, don’t just take my word for it. Turn it on, […]
dude! this is amazing!!!
i still dont know how did u do to get rick astley’s voice track!
if its there a program able to rip off vocals i would be so happy xD
can you email me an answer if u can please?
thanks dude!
i hope to see more work 😛
I used an acapella version of the song that I found on…eh…some website somewhere. I googled ‘Rick Astley acapella’ or something along those lines. 😛
Acapella versions of pop/dance tunes are quite commonplace, as they get used for doing remixes and whatnot.
This is soooo much better than both original songs! Awesome! 😀
Awesome! great music!
I heard this mash-up a while ago but somehow, fortunately, came back to it. Anyway….two musicians on either end of the crappiness spectrum but one brilliant mash-up! Cheers mate!
Good job bud keep it up.
